MCTM Provides College Scholarships

The Challenge

In their report Before It Is Too Late, the National Commission on Mathematics and Science Teaching for the 21st Century stressed that "there is a pressing national need for high quality teaching, and the teaching pool in mathematics is inadequate to meet our current needs."

Michigan Schools are now struggling with a shortage of mathematics teachers. And the situation is becoming worse. For example, 40% of the teachers in the Lansing area will be retiring in the next 3 years and it is predicted that two thirds of current math/science teachers will retire in the next 10 years.

More than ever we need to attract and encourage qualified candidates into mathematics teaching.

Opportunity For You To Contribute

  • Contribute any amount at any time! You may also contribute by supporting our money raising projects and by becoming involved in our committee. Contribute any amount to honor a former teacher or colleague; celebrate the retirement of a colleague; invest in the future.
  • Contribute $1,500 as an individual or a group and have a scholarship named for an individual or group (school, business, etc.).

MCTM'S Contribution

  • MCTM's Scholarships are awarded to encourage and support undergraduates majoring in mathematics education.
  • Each year MCTM encourages and supports several undergraduate prospective teachers of mathematics with $1500 scholarships. Since 1989, MCTM has awarded 121 scholarships totaling $147,00. (Updated August 2010)
  • MCTM endeavors to build a Scholarship Endowment Fund to ensure that ten scholarships of at least $1500 each will be awarded to future mathematics teachers each year.

MCTM Scholarship Endowment

Administration and management of the Scholarship Endowment Fund will be the responsibility of the Executive Board of MCTM.
