2007 MCTM Service Award Debbie Ferry actively strives to improve mathematics education. This is evident by the time she dedicates to working with different organizations and her mathematics knowledge. Her ability to organize things has been an asset which has helped her accomplish many things.
She has worked on the MDE Content Advisory Committee for middle school, the MiCLIMB project, the planning Task Force for Michigan Mathematics Leadership Academy (MMLA), the Michigan Mathematics Coordinators Group, the Math Science Partnership projects on Lesson Study, and has been a member of the MCTM board.
In addition to these joint activities Debbie is a member of the Detroit Area of Teachers of Mathematics board; has directed a major project addressing excellent instruction around the Grade Level Expectations (M-GLaNCE) which is being used for training the MMLA teams across the state as well as teachers in her area; started a countywide High School Mathematics Newsletter that is shared around the state; was an active member of the Michigan Department of Education's Mathematics Work Group for the High School Expectations; is working to create units for the new High School Courses based on the High School Expectations; became trained in Dynamic Classroom Assessment for high school and is now using it to train many of her districts in the assessment model; and has been active in the Parks City Mathematics Institute for several years.
These projects only begin to indicate Debbie's commitment to promoting good mathematics instruction. She is dedicated, a hard worker, and a true leader.
