Region 6 Director's AwardeeMarie Copeland Marie Copeland is not just an outstanding teacher; she is a teacher who inspires - both her students and her fellow colleagues. She brings math to life for her students through hands-on models and activities, the use of many forms of technology, and by designing experiences that challenge them to stretch themselves and to think conceptually. Marie has a thorough understanding of the new state mathematics standards and has infused them into her classroom and has worked with the Macomb Intermediate School District (MISD) to create and present professional development materials and workshops for teachers using them. At the state level, Marie served a six-year term as Recording Secretary for the Michigan Council of Teachers of Mathematics. As one of the founding teachers of the Macomb Mathematics Science Technology Center, Marie has been instrumental in shaping the mathematics curriculum of this four-year program and has been influential in launching the MMSTC Alumni Association. An inspiration to all math educators, Marie Copeland is truly a "master" teacher who models the best qualities in a teacher, a mathematician, and a human being.
