Outstanding Achievement Award PDF Print E-mail
The Michigan Council of Teachers of Mathematics Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Mathematics Education is designed to recognize the recipient's contributions to mathematics education in the state of Michigan. The award is intended to be the highest recognition MCTM can bestow upon one of its members for contributions to mathematics education.

The person selected for this award will have made significant contributions to mathematics education in one or more of the following categories:

1. Active leadership in mathematics education at the local, state and national levels.
2. Outstanding contributions to the improvement of mathematics curricula.
3. Significant engagement in professional development for teachers of mathematics at all levels.
4. Contributions to mathematics education over a significant period of time.
5. Overall excellence of contributions to mathematics education.

2008 Award Winner

Deborah Ball Deborah Loewenberg Ball, University of Michigan

Deborah Ball was chosen for the award this year based on the outstanding work she is doing for mathematics education in the state, as well as the nation. As a member of President Bush's National Mathematics Advisory Panel, Deborah contributed to the finished report on "...ways to foster greater knowledge of and improved performance in mathematics among American students...with respect to the conduct, evaluation and effective use of the results of research relating to proven-effective and evidence-based mathematics instruction. She worked with the National Panel to develop recommendations "...based on the best available scientific evidence." In addition to her work with the Panel as a whole, she was also the chair of the Task Group on Teachers and Teacher Education, an area she continues to contribute to in her work at University of Michigan.
